Dorothy Fender

March 20, 1924 — June 18, 2017

Age 93 formerly of Hamburg, IA, and most recently of Omaha, passed away peacefully on June 18th at Brookestone Village. Dorothy Fender was born on March 20, 1924, to Charles and Maye (Chicken) Wimmer of Arispe, IA. She graduated from the University of Nebraska during WWII where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She was offered and accepted her first job teaching high school typing and shorthand in Hamburg. Dorothy was well regarded by her students and selected as an honorary graduate at an all-school reunion years later. A fortunate stop for coffee at Stoner Drug Store had her noticing a particularly handsome soldier in uniform newly returned from Europe. Although Dorothy self-described as shy, the Captain most assuredly was not. Keith and Dorothy married November 10, 1946, and to this union two children were born: Jeanne Ann (“Jae”) Gilbert (Randy) of Omaha and Mark A. Fender of Austin, TX. They had three grandsons, Grant M. Gilbert, Omaha, Jesse I. and Jaxon I. Fender of Austin, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Keith of fifty years; sisters Lorene and Lois and treasured niece; Nancy Fender Cox. Dorothy was a 50-year member of Chapter FI, P.E.O. She enjoyed reading, traveling, bridge, her friends and most of all her cherished family. She devoted herself to their well-being and comfort and they responded with overwhelming affection and love for her. Survivors include older sister, Lola Maye Busenbarrick of Benton, LA (also born on March 20th), and younger brother, Donald Wimmer of Arispe, IA. Also included are numerous nieces and nephews. A brief, graveside service at Utterback Cemetery (aka Mount Zion—approximately four miles east of Hamburg, then one north) will be held on Friday, June 23rd at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Hamburg Public Library, Hamburg, Iowa, 51640.
