Obituary for Harry A. Koch, Jr.

Preceded in death his father, Harry A. Koch; mother, Katherine Denny Koch; brother, John Koch; daughter, Katherine Joyce; son-in-law, Robert Joyce.

He is survived by wife, Abigail (Gail) Koch; sons, Harry (Hal) Doorly Koch and his spouse Ashlee; Daniel Alexander Koch and his spouse Lisa; grandchildren: Kasey, Andy, Skip, Brandon, Alexa, Lilly, Zander, Jonathan, Michael and Thomas; three greatgrandchildren.

Harry was born in Omaha, attended Dundee Grade School, Omaha Central High School, and Princeton University. After graduation from college he was called to military service and served 11 months in Korea during the Korean War, the last three as an artillery battery commander.

On returning to Omaha, he joined his father in the insurance and brokerage business. He succeeded to the presidency of The Harry A. Koch, Co at the age of 28 when his father suffered a heart attack. Over the next four decades he led the Harry A. Koch Co into a new era, modernizing its systems, expanding into new lines of insurance, and more than doubling its work force.

His leadership in the industry was recognized in 1995 when he was named President of The Council of Insurance and Brokers, a national association of the two hundred and fifty largest brokers in the country. Over the years he has served as president of The Nebraska Methodist Hospital, The Nebraska Humane Society, The Boys and Girls Club of Omaha, The Rotary Club of Omaha, The Omaha Country Club, and was a member of the U.S. Strategic Command Consultation Committee for thirteen years. His deep involvement with Aksarben include being a Councilor, Governor, and King in 1997, as well as being involved with almost every committee of that organization over the years. For these contributions to Omaha he has been named to The Omaha Business Hall of Fame and the Central High School Hall of Fame.
