James Leo Flood

James “Jim” Leo Flood, aged 85, known affectionately as “Doc” by his grandchildren, passed away peacefully from this world after a brief illness.



Jim grew up in Omaha, NE and graduated from Creighton Prep High School in 1948, Creighton University in 1952, and Creighton School of Medicine in 1956, where he later served on the advisory board. He interned at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Omaha, and then served in the US Public Health Service from 1958-1960 in Terre Haute, IN. Jim then completed a surgical residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, IN. He was a member of the International College of Surgeons, the Society of Abdominal Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Iowa Medical Society, and Crawford County Memorial Hospital staff.



Jim first met his wife of 58 years, Jane Frances McKim, as a young man while ice skating. Jim stopped to help Jane get up from a fall on the ice. More than a decade later they would become reintroduced by mutual friends, and married in 1957 at St. Margaret Mary’s Church. The couple moved their fledgling family to Denison, IA in 1963 where Jim established his general and surgical practice until his retirement in 2000. Jim loved being a doctor and the community that he served. His robust practice was made possible by his loyal patients, staff, and by his two head nurses: Helen Malloy of Westside, IA and Jeanne Gorman of Denison, IA, whom he considered to be among the best of friends.



Jim loved ice skating, biking, and swimming. He took great pride in, and was passionate about, his wife, children and twenty two grandchildren. His affinity for lake life evolved into summer weekends with his family at his beloved Lake Okoboji. He and Jane spent their retirement at Okoboji, where they became devoted members of St. Joseph’s parish. With his extra time, he rediscovered his interest in books, particularly historical biographies. He was always ready to talk about the latest articles from the Wall Street Journal, and could be counted on for lively conversation regarding any current event. Jim could often be seen walking his favorite canine child, Winston, along the lakeshore. He possessed a keen sense of humor and delighted in making people laugh at his dry remarks. He will be sorely missed.



Jim was preceded in death by his parents, James Leo Sr. and Maybelle (Nywold) Flood, and by his sister, Patricia Vanhauer. He is survived by his wife, Jane McKim Flood, seven children: James Flood (Patti), Kevin Flood, Joan Mauel (John), Patricia Bilden (Philip), Patrick Flood (Betsy), Kathleen de Rubertis (Corbin), Michael Flood (Cathy), twenty two grandchildren: Sarah, Aimee, Michael Flood; Jack, Margaret, Patrick Mauel; Philip, Andrew, Claire Bilden; Kathleen, Connor, Eddie Flood; Frances, William, Celeste de Rubertis; Elizabeth, Luke, Daniel, Matthew, Ellen, Anna, Maura Flood and many other relatives and friends, including his most recent dog Murphy, who provided constant companionship during the past few months.

A visitation will be held at St. Margaret Mary’s Church on Saturday, February 13 at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m.

There will be a luncheon after the Mass for family and friends at the Field Club.

Burial will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Milford, IA on Monday, February 15 at 2p.m.
