Margaret A. "Marge" Morton

June 22, 1927 — March 16, 2022

Margaret “Marge” Newell Morton was born June 22, 1927, the fifth of eight children of John and Marie Newell. After growing up in South Omaha, Marge earned her teaching degree and taught more than 40 years.



Mrs. Norton, as Miss Newell, began her teaching career at District 24 in Waterloo, Nebraska in 1947. She taught in the Omaha Public School system at Ashland Park, Bancroft and McMillan Jr. High. She served as a teacher advisor and administrator and teacher in Alaska, Europe, Africa and South America. She taught briefly at Budlong School in the Chicago Public School system. She taught 26 years at various schools in District 66, Westside Community schools, including Arbor Heights Jr. High, Westbrook Jr. High, and Oakdale Elementary. She served for many years as Director of Programs and Curriculum for the Gifted for K to 12 at the sixteen schools throughout District 66.



Mrs. Marge Newell Morton taught all grades K to 2, and specific subjects such as English, Math, Social Studies, Spelling, Science, Reading and Math. During her career, she directed more than 80 drama productions at the elementary, junior high and secondary level, many of the plays which she wrote herself. She also taught Rocket Clubs for twenty or more years.

Mrs. Morton retired June 7, 1987, after a career in education of 40 years. After her retirement, she volunteered at Children's Hospital, Channel 7 Can Help, and conducted rocket clubs, did volunteer dramatic and group work at District 66 schools, and tutored students for free.



Marge Newell Morton graduated from the University of Omaha with a bachelor's degree, after working 50-60 hours a week, nights at the Cudahy Packing House, and received a master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and did further degree and graduate work at the University of Washington, Northwestern University, University of Heidelberg, University of Maryland at Munich, Germany, University of Omaha, and Augustana College. She attended university for thirty summers after getting her master's degree doing graduate work in all areas to make her a better teacher and administrator.



Mrs. Morton wrote "We're All God's Children", a collection of short stories and poems, published in 1966. A biography about Marge Newell Morton's life is being written by Elaine Meuse, Seattle, entitled "Danay" and is pending publication.

She held many offices in educational organizations, including the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She served as president of the District 66 retired staff organization during 1988, 1989 and 1990.



During the early 50's Mrs. Marge Newell Morton was a frequent contributor of the Omaha World Herald's public pulse, on a soap box for delinquent children and for a juvenile court.



Marge was married to her beloved husband Dale until his passing. Marge is survived by her sister, Bobby Smith from Phoenix, AZ, many nieces and nephews, dear friends at the Parson’s House and Florence Home, and other special friends and former students who will miss her greatly.
