Nancy Jane King

September 9, 1928 — February 27, 2023

Nancy King, 94, of Indian Wells, CA passed away on February 27, 2023. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, she enjoyed an active childhood including many adventurous family road trips planned by her ever inventive father. After attending Central High School, she enrolled at Scripps College of the Claremont, CA Colleges, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art History, the foundation of her lifelong support of local museums and symphonies.

Nancy married in Omaha and was a teacher, before moving with her husband to Helena, Montana where her two sons were born and raised. She eagerly embraced the outdoor lifestyle and local community while making cherished friendships that lasted a lifetime. Her infectious laughter could be heard while cross country skiing, golfing, or during a competitive game of bridge to which she became an accomplished player. Nancy never did anything by half and during this time she expanded her artistic interest to include pottery, training with David Shaner, an icon in American ceramic art. Her vibrant and genuine curiosity in others, intellect, and ability to interject her fun-loving personality and wit to any conversation endeared her to all who knew her; this included her sons with who she was fair minded and always true to her beliefs.

Nancy returned to Omaha in 1975. The following year, she married her late husband, Robert R. King of Omaha. Nancy and Bob loved life, frequently traveling across Europe yet rarely missing Fall Saturdays in Lincoln attending Nebraska Cornhusker games and tailgating with friends. Summers were spent golfing at the Omaha Country Club. Nancy was also an active member of the Junior League, expanding on her steadfast dedication to community and friendships. When Nancy was not entertaining friends, she pursued her favorite hobby, meticulously caring for her magnificent gardens. Her most personal project was the memorial scholarship she established in her elder son’s name at Dartmouth College in 1979. She was actively involved in adapting such to best assist aspiring young scholars.

She lived her later years exuding the same zest for life residing winters in California before moving to Palm Desert full time in 2016.

Nancy was preceded in death by husband, Robert R. King; parents, James B. and Nell E. Low; son, James A. Scribner; and sister, Letitia A. Pemberton. She is survived by son, William L. Scribner; and grandson; Taylor W. Scribner.
