Thomas Ashford Kuhlman

May 24, 1939 — September 16, 2022

Born in Cleveland to Orlyn Lee and Catherine Ashford Kuhlman.


He earned an Honors B.A.at Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) in classics, and as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in American Civilization at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.


He joined the faculty of the English department at Creighton University in 1967, taught many courses in literature, composition, creative writing, American studies, and American architecture, and retired in 2005 as Associate Professor Emeritus.


After retiring, he continued to teach independent study courses at Creighton for several years, and continued to write, publish, travel, and give programs for Humanities Nebraska and other organizations. His last volunteer commitments were at St. Cecilia Cathedral and the Durham Museum.


He was a president and board member of Landmarks, Inc. and served on boards of other organizations including Architectural Foundation of Nebraska, Irish American Cultural Association, Nebraska Shakespeare, Omaha Workshop Theater, and Douglas County Historical Society.


He wrote scholarly journal articles and book chapters, fiction and creative non-fiction both serious and satiric. He acted in, wrote, and produced plays, including three full-length plays performed in local community theatres.


He is survived by Mary Haynes Kuhlman, his wife of 58 years, and by his son John and daughter Katherine (Kami) of Omaha, and his brother George Ashford Kuhlman and niece Anemona Kuhlman, both of Chicago, and many other relatives and friends
