Anna Mae Glad (Jenkins) was born in Hallock, MN on February 25, 1941 to Stanley and Elvina Jenkins. She was the 6th of 8 children. Anna spent her childhood years on the family’s farm just a few miles outside of Hallock. She and her two brothers and five sisters lived in a small farmhouse.
In high school, Anna enjoyed music and played clarinet in the band. In May of 1959, Anna graduated from Hallock High School. In the Fall of that year, she enrolled at Bemidji State College where she would meet the love of her life, Larry Glad. They met while waiting in the cafeteria line. The two had never met before college even though they grew up only 12-miles apart. Larry was from the small neighboring town of Lancaster. Anna graduated College in July of 1962 with her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She and Larry were married on August 25th, 1962. Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force.
While Larry attended Officer’s Training School (OTS), Anna accepted a teaching assignment in Hibbing MN, and taught school for a year. After training, Larry received his first commission as a 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to Little Rock AFB in Arkansas. Anna joined him there. While stationed at Little Rock they welcomed their two children. Anna enjoyed military life, supported Larry in the role of military wife, and raised their children. Anna took great pride in the achievements of Julie and Jim. The family moved many times, living in Arkansas, Wyoming, California, Virginia, and North Dakota. In 1978, Larry was assigned to a remote tour in Turkey for a year. It was difficult, but Anna persevered and took care of the family and home. Larry retired as a Major in 1984. They bought their first home and settled in Grand Forks, ND where they lived for many years.
In 2011, Larry and Anna made their final move to Nebraska to be near Julie. Ultimately, they moved into Elk Ridge Village, an independent living community in Elkhorn, NE. They had many friends there and enjoyed playing Bingo, making trips to the local Casinos, and spending time with family. Larry passed away in December of 2018. With Larry’s passing, the family thought that Anna would need to move to assisted living, but she was stubbornly independent and managed to live by herself until her death. She was very proud of that independence. Anna passed away peacefully at Lakeside Hospital on July 8th (her only hospitalization since Jim was born in 1966). She was 82 years old. She was very thankful for the care that she received and for the love and support of her family and friends.
Anna is survived by daughter Julie (Todd) Evans, son Jim, brother Bill (Nancy) Jenkins, sister Carol (Jerry) Kalinowski, sister-in-law Mary Jenkins, brother-in-law Alan Sargeant, and many nieces and nephews. Anna was preceded in death by her parents, brother John, sisters Dorothy, Edith, Mary, and Lorna, brothers-in-law Roy Milbridge and Jerry Daniels. We will all miss her greatly. May she rest in God’s eternal peace.
