Gary Jones was born in Bangor, Wisconsin to Floyd E. Jones and Melba Jones. He finished his undergraduate at the University of Wisconsin Madison. He then completed his DVM at Michigan State University. Gary then practiced Veterinary Medicine for roughly 17 years, with the last years in Marshfield, Wisconsin. Gary returned to academic life and earned his PHD in Veterinary Microbiology. Gary then went on to work in research with Pharmacia, Bayer Pharmaceutical, and Schering-Plough.
Gary was married to his wife, Cheryl, for roughly 44 years. They had 4 children, Eben, Trevor, Tyler, and Ariana. Gary included his family in some of the activities that he enjoyed through life such as sailing, biking, reading, and cooking. Gary enjoyed writing to his family and friends about the antics that his children got into, fortunately he was never short on material.
Gary was bright, thoughtful, and patient (a necessary trait with children like his). He was a student of history and enjoyed teaching his children both history and science. After retiring Gary enjoyed volunteering at the Henry Doorly Zoo. Gary also authored several books while enjoying retirement.
Gary was a loving father and husband, and was a good friend and colleague to those who knew him. Gary's wit, sense of humor, and compassion will be missed by his family and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Melba Jones; his wife, Cheryl; and his brother, Robert. Gary is survived by his children Eben, Trevor, Tyler, Ariana, his two daughters-in-law; three grandchildren; his brother, Dan; and sister-in-law, Beth.
