Emblem

Owen Gregory Neary, a treasured patriarch, community stalwart and cherished friend of many passed away on Thursday, January 11 at age 90. He was born the youngest of six children on May 27, 1933 to the late Mary and Raymond Neary of Omaha.

Owen attended both Creighton Preparatory School and Creighton University, where he was crowned King Creighton 1955 and met many lifelong friends, including Elizabeth “Betty” Pitner, his wife of more than 65 years.

His dedication to school also matched his commitment to his country, and he served as a second lieutenant in Korea.

After returning home, Owen had a successful career in business, including leadership roles at J.L. Brandeis & Sons, Data Documents Inc. and eventually Regal Awards as owner and president.

Inspired by his Jesuit education, Owen truly understood what it meant to be a man for and with others. His devotion to his hometown of Omaha was evident through his service on the boards of many nonprofit institutions including College World Series of Omaha, Inc., Creighton Prep, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, the Heart Ministry Center, the Nebraska Safety Council and the St. Augustine Indian Mission.

His quick wit, kind heart, deep faith, storytelling skill and penchant for people made him an exceptional husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was preceded in death by parents, Mary and Raymond Neary; sisters, Mary Helen Cassel, Jeanne Higgins and Margaret Beitenman; brothers, Charles Neary and John Neary.

Owen is survived by his beloved wife, Betty; sons, Joseph Neary (Deborah), Patrick Neary (Anne Ginn) and Jeffrey Neary (Kathleen) of Omaha; daughters, Julianne Engerman (Douglas) of Littleton, CO, Sarah Neary of Iowa City, IA and Jennifer Moylan (Joseph) of Oconomowoc, WI; grandchildren, Emily Engerman, Katherine Engerman, Margaret Parasch (Matthew), Grace Neary, Jack Neary, Charlie Neary, Owen Moylan, Brady Moylan and Tobias Moylan; also many nieces and nephews that made up his “Neary Nation.”
